QUARANTINE STATION, MANLY
Truly the most haunted bit of the tour, I experienced a large cold spot near the marble fire place and a heaviness in the air of the left Hospital wing. I did not have any other encounters in this building but I believe that if I had of stayed behind when there weren't so many tours about I could almost guarantee seeing, hearing or feeling something paranormal.
This is the site where Channel V's crew witnessed strange lights at a later date.
The Hospital section consists of two wards, the first one being the wooden ward which contains two long rooms separated by a wall and some small rooms in the middle (I believe this ward has since burnt down unfortunately). The brick ward is similar and next door from the wooden, but a bit more modern. You occasionally can spend the night in the brick ward, there are some pretty scary stories from people who have spent the night here. The views from the wooden ward are absolutely spectacular and too see such beauty from a place so haunted somehow doesn't seem quite right.
In 1984 the family of a resident were having a look around the brick ward, they walked through, had a look and went onto the wooden ward. Before leaving the hospital they looked back into the windows at the brick ward. The beds were all piled up on top of each other in the far corner (they were not like this when they went though just before). They left the hospital and went home, the next day the beds were all back in place.
The most common sighting in the hospital wards are of people on the beds, old people, young people, people who are transparent and when looked at twice have suddenly and unexplainably disappeared the second time.
A ghostly Matron supposedly still does her rounds of the wards at night and does not take kindly to any unkind comments about the bathrooms. One man noticed that the bath had dirt in it and commented about seeing peoples names written in it then went on to joke about how the Matron who haunts the ward hasn't been doing her job properly. Something immediately came over him, he had to go outside and vomit on the grass quite a few times. The guide went over to him and found him extremely pale and shaking severely. Later on as he was walking to another part of the Station up a hill he heard heavy breathing close behind him, he commented to the person behind him "yeah it's pretty heavy going isn't it?", when he turned around there was no one there, the nearest person behind him was at least 10 meters away. Other tour members said they saw him later, frightened and running up the path back to the top of the hill (most of the tour is down the side of a hill, starting at the top) the guide went after him to calm him down and see that he was alright. He was still pale, shaking and sweating profusely. He announced that he went on the tour as a complete skeptic, to get a few laughs, but now he was not so sure.
The staff had a sleep over in the brick ward to test it out before they allowed the public sleep overs in the hospital wing. They mainly wanted to test it to see if it leaked when it rained, was too cold and that people could sleep in the old beds.
Nine people were part of this sleep over. four on the old beds inside and three outside on the verandah. Sometime in the early hours of the morning one of them awoke finding herself being held upright in a sitting position. She felt a pair of hands on her left shoulder and arm as though they were holding her up. She knew someone was standing there and was far to scared to actually look at what was there (can you blame her?). In her peripheral vision she could just make out a white apparition. Looking at the others she could see them all fast asleep but was in one of those situations we all dream about, she couldn't scream. She managed to somehow mouth the words go away three times and the apparition disappeared. I don't know how but apparently she went back to sleep after this.
After this the public was then allowed to sleep over in the brick ward. The first public sleep over went well. One lady had the experience of being woken up by someone unseen stroking her face, she also could hear the laundry trolley being wheeled around the adjacent ward. Apparently this woman had chosen the same bed to sleep in as the guide who had the previous experience on the staff sleep over.

Around the same time during a tour, the guide was talking to everyone near a closed linen cupboard door. The door was not usually closed. As the guide continued talking the door was suddenly thumped from the inside, as if someone was trying to get out, or a prankster trying to scare people. It then happened a second time and some people on the tour decided to investigate further by opening the door. There was no-one inside the room at all and the only entrance or exit was that door. They went on their way through the hospital whilst the thumping inside the linen cupboard continued for a third time.
